Read at Your Own Risk

Steven Millhauser's "The Next Thing" in the May issue of Harpers' is an outrageous and disorienting act of fiction. I've been discussing it w/ B all morning, but it won't be tamed. This is one that's going to continue to disturb me for a long time. Like Paul Bowles' "A Distant Episode" in that way, but worse because a little more relevant....

I cannot get enough of this story. I hope that when N and L go to junior high, it'll be in their great american literature class. or is it canadian? anyway, it's kind of addictive and compelling in an anxiety-producing way. kind of like your story, Young Frankenstein, which makes me cry whenever I read it.
